First Contract (2010) is part of a work group that includes the object, Chain Reaction, and the video installation, Little Mountain. It consists of a series of 9 photographs concerned with the complex ramifications of the Western insistence on quantifying land, thus transforming it from being primarily a place which confers local identity and a place to live into an object of trade and speculation. The photos also reflect on the colonial dispossession of the original inhabitants of the north American continent, especially the First Nation peoples of Canada by using ‘flagging’—plastic ribbons normally used to mark property borders—in lines or triangles and ironically re-creating the Euclidian geometries of surveyor rituals of appropriation and possession. This is still contested territory.

All of the photos were taken in the proximity of the 49^th parallel—49°N—the border between Canada and the USA. This line of latitude also runs through a few kilometres of Waldviertel, Austria, where it crosses the 15°E meridian. This turns place into time at a site so close to the Czech border that for almost fifty years it was effectively off limits.

First Contract (2010) ist Teil einer Serie von Arbeiten, die auch das Objekt Chain Reaction und die Videoinstallation Little Mountain beinhaltet. Es ist eine 9-teilige Fotosarbeit, die sich mit den komplexen Auswirkungen des westlichen Insistierens auf die Quantifizierung von Grund und Boden auseinandersetzt. In diesem Prozess wird Land, das in erster Linie Raum zum Leben bedeutet, in eine Handelsware bzw. in ein Spekulationsobjekt verwandelt. Die Fotos beschäftigen sich mit der kolonialen Enteignung der UreinwohnerInnen des nordamerikanischen Kontinents, vor allem der First Nation Völker von Kanada. Es werden ,Flagging’- Kunststoffbänder, die normalerweise zum Markieren von Grundstücksgrenzen benützt werden, in Linien bzw. als Dreiecke gezogen, um auf ironische Art und Weise die euklidische Geometrie der Landvermessung, das Ritual von Aneignung und Besitzanspruch zu re- inszenieren. Es ist immer noch umstrittenes Territorium.

Alle Fotos wurden nahe am 49. Breitengrad (49° N), an der Grenze zwischen Kanada und den USA aufgenommen. Dieser läuft auch einige Kilometer durch das Waldviertel, Österreich, wo er den 15° E Längengrad kreuzt. Dieser verwandelt Ort in Zeit, so nahe an der tschechischen Grenze, die für fast fünfzig Jahre nahezu unzugänglich war.
